Rally di Roma Capitale set for tenth FIA ERC appearance

The 2026 edition, scheduled from 3 to 5 July, will be observed by the FIA in view of the 2027 season and confirms its dual validity for the FIA European Rally Championship and CIAR Sparco for the tenth time. An event increasingly central to the continental landscape, underpinned by the strength and excellence of Italian rallying.

Rome (ITA), 3 March 2026 – Rally di Roma Capitale is approaching one of the most significant milestones in its recent history. The 2026 edition will mark a key step in the event’s international growth and will celebrate its tenth appearance as a round of the FIA European Rally Championship, once again alongside the Campionato Italiano Assoluto Rally Sparco.

Scheduled from 3 to 5 July, the event organised by Motorsport Italia and Max Rendina will welcome back the leading names of European and Italian rallying, confirming its dual ERC and CIAR Sparco status. Over the years, this combination has established Rally di Roma Capitale as one of the most competitive and closely followed events on the continental calendar, blending the excellence of the Italian championship with the high-level competition of the European series.

Since its ERC debut in 2017, Rally di Roma Capitale has built a modern legacy shaped by standout performances and memorable finishes. The inaugural European edition remains unique for the closest finish in ERC history, with Bryan Bouffier winning by just 0.3 seconds over Kajetan Kajetanowicz. Alexey Lukyanuk then secured back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2020, while Giandomenico Basso delivered the first Italian ERC win on home soil in 2019.

Basso returned to the top in 2021 with a commanding margin of more than 35 seconds over Andrea Crugnola. Damiano De Tommaso claimed victory in 2022. After previous setbacks, Crugnola took success in both 2023 and 2024. The latest edition produced another dramatic finale, with Basso sealing his third Rome victory by just 3.7 seconds over Andrea Mabellini. Italian drivers have now won six of the nine ERC editions held in Rome, underlining the strength of the CIAR Sparco contenders on home ground.

Beyond the sporting dimension, the 2026 edition will introduce important logistical and organisational updates. The changes aim to enhance operational efficiency for teams, media and spectators, strengthening Rome’s central role while improving overall accessibility and event management in line with its international ambitions.

This evolution has also been defined in light of the presence of FIA observers ahead of the 2027 FIA World Rally Championship calendar selection process. The competitive route will shift its centre of gravity towards the Rieti area in 2026, with plans to re-extend into Ciociaria in 2027 following the successful cooperation developed over recent seasons.

The event will be delivered in close collaboration with Roma Capitale, the Department for Major Events, Regione Lazio, the Automobile Club d’Italia and ACI Sport, the municipalities involved along the route, and under the patronage of the Ministry for Sport and Youth, Sport e Salute and CONI, supported by a broad network of institutional and territorial partners.

Environmental sustainability will remain a key pillar. Rally di Roma Capitale will continue its commitment to maintaining and strengthening its three-star FIA Environmental Programme accreditation, implementing concrete measures to reduce environmental impact and promote public awareness. Road safety and social inclusion projects will also continue, reflecting the event’s long-term strategic vision and responsible growth pathway.
